If there was ever a game that bridged the fans of 2D and 3D Sonic titles, it’s Sonic Generations. On paper, a greatest-hits collection of past Sonic stages should be a cheap gimmick. In execution, the level design is so fine-tuned that Sonic Generations earns its own identity. The game goes so hard that even the level from Sonic the Hedgehog is fun to play — even if it is a stark reminder that Sonic ’06 exists.
This latest title from theSonicfranchise is currently available to pick on on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. Upon the 30th anniversary of the first game, Sonic Team knew the series needed to be refreshed. Their mission was to define what a modern Sonic game should be and solidify the series’ direction for the future. Series producer Takashi Iizuka wanted the next Sonic game to inform future games, similar to how Sonic Adventure set an example for the games that followed. Frontiers was developed from scratch as the team focused on transitioning Sonic’s powers into an open-world sandbox while remaining true to previous entries. The Xbox version of the announcement trailer contains subtitles that attribute the unknown voice to “Amy,” referring to Amy Rose, who is revealed to be the voice from the trailer in the final game.
At the system’s peak in January 1992, the Genesis owned 65 percent of the 16-bit console market. Nintendo would of course strike back with a vengeance throughout most of 1992 and Sega would need the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in November just to get back to 50-percent market share. But in the big picture, Sega had accomplished the goal they set out to achieve in 1988.
It’s an admirable attempt, but I’m not entirely sure what it wants to be. However, longtime Sonic fans may want check out “Frontiers,” despite its bizarre features, to recapture some zen nostalgia. The rest seem like pointless features that should have been in the game in the first place. SEGA is also releasing a free Holiday Cheer Suit DLC for Sonic Frontiers this will give Sonic a Christmas outfit.
Maybe there’s a place in Sonic’s future for a Sonic Mania follow-up showcasing more of what the Retro Engine can do. A different kind of 3D Sonic appeared in 2013 on the Nintendo 3DS, when Sega gave the original Sonic the Hedgehog a stereoscopic 3D makeover. It’s similar to viewing a Real-D 3D film at the cinema, only instead of passively viewing content, you interact directly with the on-screen action, while controlling the depth of the 3D effect. Sega later used the effect on several later 3DS Genesis classics . Sonic made a successful transition into 3D with Sonic Adventure on the Sega Dreamcast. The game incorporated the Dreamcast’s visual memory unit — a detachable memory card with controls and an LCD screen — with a mini-game called Chao Adventure.
